Latch Hook Rug as a Hobby

If you’re looking for something you can do with your family that doesn’t require breaking the bank or investing too much time and energy, you can try rug making. Latch hook rug kits is one of the most productive things you can pass on to your kids.

This hobby will help your children be more productive. It will also teach them about patience and perseverance.

Even if you're just using this hobby to relax, there's no way you will get bored with creating homemade rugs. What I usually do is to get a latch hook rug kit with a challenging design and work on it whenever I feel stressed. When it’s time to make dinner, I can put the latch hook rug materials away in a box until I can work on it again.

Handmade rugs are awesome to have around. If you're into decorative pieces, you can use your homemade rugs as love seat accents or ottoman covers. They also make great gifts for birthdays, anniversaries and weddings. Starting this hobby may lead to the creation of a family tradition.

Here are some guidelines if you're one of the many who are latching on this great past time (forgive the pun)...

Choose a simple and easy design to start with. You can choose a design that uses only three or four colors. At a glance, you can determine whether the pattern is for a beginner or not. Simplicity of the pattern is crucial if you want your daughter or son to join you in your rug making.

Start with a basic design then work your way up to a more complicated one. My first rug pattern was "Moonlight Meow" because I am into pets and the colors on the finished product are perfect. The fun begins when your family members start requesting patterns that you can work on.

Get the best quality hooks and yarns for your projects. One thing that isn’t included in latch hook rug kits is the latch hook. Most hobby stores have several designs of latch hooks available. Latch hooks with wooden handles are a bit more expensive (by a few cents) than metal ones. Although hooks don’t bend or break easily, it's better to get a few hooks just in case you have to lend your own to your daughter or friend who wants to try out rug making herself.
